Cargill Cocoa & Chocolate

A Christmas gift for the cocoa community (15/12/2009)

Giving back to the local communities in which we work and live is an important part of Cargill. This Christmas we are concentrating our efforts on a children's home in West Africa.

The orphanage is situated in Soubré, the main cocoa producing region on the Ivory Coast. It currently cares for 12 children and is in great need of repair and supplies. The orphanage is run by Mrs. Ouedraogo Passanoinbé Maimouna, who in 1967, at the tender age of 12, lost her parents and had to take care of her 6 month old brother. He became the first of many orphans that she would end up taking care of over the coming years.

Cargill is now sponsoring the renovation of their building and equipping it with new toilets and showers for the orphans. As part of the renovation project, new dorms will be built and furnished with beds, mattresses, tables and chairs. Cargill has also committed to providing a year's supply of food, giving the children access to healthcare and paying for school tuition for all the children in the orphanage. Once the work is completed, we hope that the children will enjoy a safer, happier and healthier environment in which to grow and develop.

We wish her and her children a joyful Christmas and a healthy 2010.
